Computer Science Zero for High School Students

Home Prospective Home CS Zero for High School

In Spring 2004, The Tech Department of Computer Science offered a free course in programming at five High Schools throughout the region. Clay County High School, Oak Hill High School, Valley High School, Riverside High School, and Capitol High School hosted 7 week evening course. Faculty members from the Computer Science Department conducted the course and helped intrudeced students to the platform independent language Python.

CS Zero is a College 101 beginning course that assumes no previous programming experience. Elementary programming techniques will be introduced the first two sessions, quickly followed by simple graphics and the “how-to's” for making graphical user interfaces (GUI) which are used by most programs. Ideally, students should have access to a personal computer and internet, but this is not a requirement. All necessary course materials such as Language compilers and associated software will be provided the first class session to all students.

Some of the students who participated in this course were interested in applying their new programming language skills. Tech Computer Science students assisted the professors at each location and helped organize interested students into teams to compete at the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) Tech programming competition held on April 26th from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. This was an optional event for students in CS Zero, but we encouraged participation. The competition indeed turned out to be a success, and everyone had fun.

All high school students, teachers, and the general public were invited to attend these free courses at any location. Senior students planning on attending Tech had the option of enrolling for college credit that will help fulfill a portion of their computer science elective requirements at Tech.

Please check back, as we will post information on this year's programming competition as the materials are obtained.
