The Computer Science Program at Tech is a well established and proven program with 36 years of service to the State of West Virginia. The Computer Science degree program began in 1972 as a program of study within the Department of Electrical Engineering. The first Computer Science graduating class completed degree requirements in 1975. In 1978, the program was moved to the Mathematics Department, and finally became a separate department within the College of Engineering in 1986. There are approximately 55 students currently enrolled as majors within Computer Science with an additional 35 students majoring in Computer Engineering (BSCpE) and other disciplines that enroll in the core computer science courses.

Tech provides students with an education that will make them exceptionally desirable by employers. According to a recent study by the Chancellor of the Higher Education Policy Commission, Tech graduates earn the highest average starting salary of all four-year West Virginia colleges and universities at $37, 477. In fact, it is rather common for the starting salaries of Computer Science majors to be above this average (in 2007 - $47,000+ was a common starting figure). The field of computers is wide-open with a high demand for qualified personnel. Our students have a choice of career paths upon graduation ranging from private and government employment to the pursuit of advanced degree and graduate studies.

Another positive aspect of Computer Science at WVU Tech is the strong relationship formed between other students and faculty through student organizations and functions sponsored by the CS Department. The main student organization, Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), gives students many opportunities to enrich their academic background as well as make new friends. Activities sponsored by ACM and CS include cookouts, hosting programming competitions, and LAN parties. Students in ACM also have the opportunities to compete in various programming competitions as well as attend seminars on the latest video game design and programming techniques. To learn more about ACM, visit WVU Tech's ACM Chapter.
